New Year, New Wardrobe: Closet Clean Out Tips

New Year, New Wardrobe: Closet Clean Out Tips

One of my resolutions is to be more purposeful in the things that I purchase and the things that I keep. I believe this mostly applies to my admiration for clothing.

To kick off the new year, I decided to go through my closet and figure out what “sparked joy” and what could go. It was quite the process, but I am happy with how my wardrobe turned out.

By doing this, I learned what tips and tricks worked best. I hope that these may help you as they helped me:

Take everything out of your closet. When I say everything, I mean everything. Throw all of your clothes on your bed to start the process. It will show you how much you currently have and put it into perspective.

Make a pile of what you want to let go. Items that no longer serve you can go into a “donate” or “sell” stack. Items that you want to keep can be hung. If an item is completely damaged or worn out, toss it.

Try stuff on. If you are indecisive about certain items, try them on! Then you can see if the item fits or looks how you like.

Have fun with it! I personally enjoy listening to a podcast while I organize. It makes the time go by so fast. Cleaning out your closet doesn’t have to feel like a chore.

Ask yourself questions. Think: What clothes do you feel the best wearing? What clothes do you feel bored with? Only keep the clothes that are functional and that you truly enjoy.

Organize clothes by style/type. Hang your blouses by other blouses and dresses by other dresses. This makes it super easy for you to find what you want in your closet when getting ready. You can take this a step further by color-coding by type as well.

Use felt hangers if you can. These will really optimize your space. They take up less space than plastic hangers, and they hold clothes more effectively. I feel that they are worth the upfront investment.

Happy cleaning!
