Elevate Your Look with Curtain Bangs: My Before and After

Elevate Your Look with Curtain Bangs: My Before and After

This 70’s hairstyle is making a major comeback. Vogue UK has even declared the curtain fringe as the biggest hair trend for summer 2021. I cannot tell you how many curtain bang TikTok tutorials tempted me before I booked my hair appointment. I am happy that I went to a local salon, Bloom Collaborative, to get the look.

It was my first hair appointment in a while, so I was excited to finally treat myself. I booked a cut as I typically do, but I also came ready with some inspiration photos on my phone. I described the length of bangs I wanted as “down to my smile.” I didn’t want them too short or too long. I figured this would be the perfect length to frame my face, as well as a good length to style.

For my trim, I asked for all of my dead ends to be chopped off. I trusted whatever length my hairstylist thought would be healthiest. As I said, it had been a while, so a few inches off seemed appropriate.

I took a selfie before my hair appointment and a selfie a couple of days after my appointment for comparison. I’m purposely not showing you my fresh out of the salon look since I am not able to recreate that on a regular basis. Instead, I want to give you a realistic and everyday view.

I absolutely love how the curtain bangs turned out. It’s a subtle change, but it’s just the change I wanted. I appreciate how the bangs work with my face shape and how they work with my naturally wavy hair.

If you are considering curtain bangs, I’d recommend looking at lots of photos for inspiration. There are quite a few variations and options, so it’s important to get specific about what you want. You and a stylist can create a look that works best for you!

Currently, I’m having fun learning all the styling tips and tricks for my new bangs. TikTok has been a great source of inspiration once again. As I figure out the hacks that work and create some of my own, I will keep you posted!

My Drugstore Beauty Must-Haves

My Drugstore Beauty Must-Haves

You can treat yourself without breaking the bank. In fact, there are many little luxuries that you can find at your local drugstore.

In preparation for this blog post, I went to Walgreens and picked up a few of my favorites. The items vary from skincare to makeup to nail care. I believe the following list has something for everyone!

#1. Soap & Glory What A Peeling Mask. The first time I used this, I was shocked at just how pink it truly was. It gave me a good laugh when I looked at myself in the mirror while applying.

But, it works very nicely. After using it, my skin feels much softer and refreshed. I also like that it stays on for about 20-25 minutes. While it’s on, I can simply relax and enjoy it.

#2. Elf Expert Liquid Liner. This has been a staple in my routine for years. It’s extremely affordable, and it allows you to create the perfect cat-eye. Plus, it stays in place throughout the day. I haven’t found a better liner.

#3. Soap & Glory Ultra Smoothing Lip Oil. I love the tint, and it’s very hydrating. This is my go-to when I want a glossier look.

#4. Sally Hansen Cuticle Rehab Balm. During cooler seasons, my cuticles get very dehydrated. This product with lotion helps!

#5. Kiss Gel Fantasy Short Nails. I used to love getting acrylics, but it gets really expensive. Not to mention, acrylics are pretty rough on your actual nails. Now, when I want the look of acrylics I go for glue-on nails. I like the color of these Kiss Gel Fantasy ones, and the length is perfect!

3 Ways to Style Your Hair with Claw Clips

3 Ways to Style Your Hair with Claw Clips

Claw clips have been making a major comeback. Lately, I can’t miss them while scrolling through Instagram. I decided to try the trend myself and come up with some cute and easy looks to show off during Zoom calls.

I picked up a large claw clip from my local corner store. I’ve seen a ton of cute options on Etsy as well. If you have long hair like me, the large claw will be best. If your hair is short, you may find that these styles work best with a small or medium claw clip.

French Twist Pony. I love this first look as an alternative to putting a hair tie or scrunchie in my hair to switch things up. All you have to do is gather your hair into a low pony, twist up, and secure your twist with the claw clip. If you want to see how I did this, you can watch here.

French Twist Tuck. For this look, you follow just about the same process as the first. You gather your hair in a low pony, twist up, and get your claw ready. The only difference is you want to clamp more of your hair in. Since I have long hair, I had to twist my hair up a bit more and then fold it down to be clamped.

Low Bun Claw. For this final style, you will gather your hair in a low pony. Then you can twist your hair while wrapping it into a low bun. But don’t wrap all of your hair into the bun! Leave a fair chunk of it out to clamp above the bun with your claw clip. Easy and cute!

What I Learned From Too Faced’s Beauty School

What I Learned From Too Faced’s Beauty School

Too Faced and Her Campus recently hosted their first virtual event, Beauty School. Representatives from each company took to their webcams to share their personal tips and tricks. I thought the event was very fun and informative.

Before attending, I received a gorgeous care package from Too Faced with a few goodies to try out. My favorite item has been the Better Than Sex Mascara. During Beauty School, I learned how to get the most out of the product and how to apply mascara like a pro.

Jazmine Escoto, Too Faced’s Manager of Global Education Artistry and Digital Trainer, shared the secrets to perfect lashes. Here are some key takeaways to put into practice:

Use an eyelash curler before applying your mascara. An eyelash curler will give your lashes a lift which will make them appear naturally longer.

Apply mascara using the “bottoms up” method. Too Faced recommends applying mascara to your bottom lashes first. This is to help you avoid getting mascara on your lids.

Utilize the mascara tip. After applying mascara to your top lashes, use the tip of your brush to push lashes up. Start at the outer corner and work your way in.

Wiggle your wand. While applying mascara wiggle the brush. This helps your mascara to distribute more evenly on your lashes. It also helps with lash volume.

After following these tips, you won’t even need false lashes. But, you can pop them on if you like. A key message of Beauty School was to do whatever makes you feel beautiful. You can choose to be natural or bold; just make sure you are being you!

Beauty Review: Are Dryer Hair Brushes Worth It?

Beauty Review: Are Dryer Hair Brushes Worth It?

I don’t know about you, but I have been seeing dryer hair brushes *everywhere*. It seems to be one of the hottest beauty tools on the market right now. Various sources claim that a dryer brush can provide you with a perfect at-home blowout.

I’ve been extremely curious about the tool and how it might work for me. So, I was very excited when Conair sent me over The Knot Dr. Dryer Brush to try out along with some other self-care goodies.

For some background, my hair is naturally wavy. After I shower, I typically just let it air dry. I will usually use a beach wave or sea salt spray to enhance my curls.

This routine works perfect for me, unless I am in a rush to get somewhere. Then, heat comes in handy. Let’s be honest, we don’t always have all day for our hair to dry. I decided to give the dryer brush a try this past week while I was getting ready to go to class.

Here is a look at my hair before I washed it and after I washed it:

And, here is a look at my hair after using the dryer brush:

The dryer brush glided through my hair and felt amazing on my scalp. I alternated brushing from the top and underneath my hair throughout drying. I rotated the brush as I moved it from my roots to my ends. I also alternated between the high and low heat settings depending on how dry different areas of my head were. It only took me about 10-15 minutes to completely dry my hair.

My hair felt way softer after using the dryer brush. I believe you can also see a significant difference in my hair’s texture from the before and after images. I can also notice a difference in volume from the before and after. Immediately after using the brush, I noticed some frizz. But, after finishing my morning routine, the frizz was pretty much gone.

One tip that I have is to really brush your hair out with a regular brush before using a dryer brush. This helps the dryer brush to just glide through your hair, and it makes the experience a bit more relaxing. The dryer brush can get out your tangles, but I preferred the experience without knots.

So, are dryer hair brushes worth it? I would say yes. If you are looking for a quick way to dry and style your hair in the morning, it is worth it. I can’t speak for other brands, but I found that Conair’s dryer brush was high quality and effective.

Skin Care Mini Fridges: The Benefits & The Issues

Skin Care Mini Fridges: The Benefits & The Issues

Maybe it’s the quarantine talking, but I have been seriously considering if I need a Skin Care Mini Fridge. The easy answer (and the answer my boyfriend gives) is “no”, but my heart is telling me “yes.” Whenever I see a skin care #shelfie pic on my Insta timeline, I daydream about what mine would look like.

I decided to do some research to round up the benefits and issues associated with Skin Care Mini Fridges. I figured it would help all of us understand the trend and answer the question: “is it worth it?”.

The Potential Benefits

Longer lasting products. According to NYC Dermatologist, Debra Jaliman, products containing vitamin C, retinol, and benzoyl peroxide keep better in cooler environments.

It should also be noted that all natural and organic beauty products inspired Ilona Safnonova to create the Makeup Fridge. Clean formulas don’t include many “preservatives”, so they can potentially last longer chilled.

Enhanced skin care routine. While a Skin Care Mini Fridge won’t completely change your product, it could change your product’s performance. For example, cold moisturizers can help to soothe puffiness. Also, a face mask can feel better with a cooler application.

Aesthetic & luxury value. You have to admit Skin Care Mini Fridges are cute! They could add a fun pop of color to your space. Also, they could make your morning and night routines feel a little more luxurious.

The Potential Issues

Counter space. If you have a small bathroom or limited counter space a Skin Care Mini Fridge might not fit in without accommodations.

Lack of necessity. Most of us have a regular fridge. Skin care products could just go in there.

Cost. Prices range on Skin Care Mini Fridges depending on the brand and size. $50 USD to $150 USD is pretty standard.

Is The SCMF Worth It?

If you frequently use skin care products, want a little luxury, and have some coin to spend…I’d say yes. If you don’t include skin care in your daily routine, then it may not be worth it.

I frequently use all natural/organic products, so a Skin Care Mini Fridge really appeals to me. I also believe it would be a great investment in the name of self-care.

How-To Boost Your Beauty Routine with Collagen

How-To Boost Your Beauty Routine with Collagen

Collagen-based beauty products and powders have been growing in popularity. They offer an edible way to get better skin, stronger nails, and healthier hair. The idea is if you treat your inside well, then your outside will show it.

For a bit of background, Collagen is the main structural protein that we have in our bodies. We have it in our skin, bones, and muscles. It has an influence on our appearance and how our bodies work.

As we get older, our collagen breaks down faster than we can replace it. Collagen deficiencies can cause things like wrinkles and brittle nails/hair. This is where collagen supplements come in.

I wanted to see how the growing trend of edible collagen could work for me. Most collagen-based beauty products contain meat/fish, but I was able to find a plant-based option. Copina Co creates vegan collagen powders in three different flavors: original, cacao, and matcha.

I went for the matcha option. If you have been following along for a bit, you will know I cannot resist a good matcha latte.

To make the collagen-boosted drink, I combined the matcha powder with a warm cup of oat milk. I used my hand frother to really mix it, and then I poured the matcha over ice to complete my latte.

I found this drink to be the perfect addition to my morning routine. It is such a treat to enjoy after my workout, and it pairs well with my breakfast.

Aside from taste, I have also noticed some beauty benefits. My nails are actually growing healthier! Nail strength is something I have always struggled with; whenever my nails would grow to a decent length they would break. But, since I started drinking collagen (over a week ago) my nails have been thriving.

I am excited to see what other benefits I will see as I continue sipping. Just a couple days ago, I asked my Instagram community if they have ever used collagen and what they noticed. @betho_g said she had stronger hair and clearer skin. @milwaukeemomma experienced “thicker hair and nails.”

Have you ever used collagen products? What was your experience? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments or on Instagram. Let’s chat!

Skin Care Diaries: Natural Beauty Products

Skin Care Diaries: Natural Beauty Products

We have to talk more about what is *really* in our skin care products. Parabens, PEGs, Sulfates, Mineral oils, Petrolatum, and Synthetic colors aren’t good for us, but they are included in many beauty ingredient labels. When I did some research and saw that the average woman encounters nearly 200 different chemicals a day in the name of self-care, I realized this was a major issue.

I evaluated what beauty products I had in my current roster. There were definitely some that I could go natural with. To find my new fixes, I went to Troupe‘s website. They are an indie beauty marketplace that showcases natural and ethical products. After window shopping the site, I decided to treat myself to a couple new skin care items. In about two weeks after ordering, I received my package.

Detoxing Pores & Clearing Skin

The first thing I opened was the all natural Cacao & Chamomile Clearing Clay Mask from Herbal Dynamics Beauty. Doesn’t that sound relaxing? It also has lavender in it which really sold me.

First Impressions: It looks like dessert. The creamy texture and sweet smell could almost make your mouth water.

Trying it Out: The application went very smoothly. As the mask was settling in, it still felt hydrating. I left the mask on for 10 minutes and then rinsed it off. The mask left my face feeling very soft, clean, and refreshed. I enjoy doing a mask each week, so this product will fit into my routine perfectly.

Healthy Hydration & Illumination

The other item I ordered was UpCircle‘s Face Moisturiser. I tend to use moisturizer every day, so I wanted a new and natural swap. I also saw it was loaded with nourishing ingredients like cocoa butter and aloe vera. There’s even vitamin E from the powdered argan shells.

First Impressions: Right away I noticed the gorgeous orange, citrus smell. Then I looked inside and could see the smooth, creamy consistency.

Trying it Out: The moisturizer had a lotion-like texture that felt light to apply. My skin really soaked it up, but a little went a long way. Throughout the day my face stayed moisturized without feeling or looking oily. This product will definitely stay a part of my morning and evening routines.

Final Thoughts

I am happy I invested in some new products that I can feel good about (and that my skin feels good about). When I’m shopping for self-care in the future, I will definitely pay more attention to ingredient labels. We can fight for cleaner beauty products by voting with our dollars.

If you feel like checking out Troupe Beauty too, you can use my code “Megan” on the site. (p.s. I purchased the products shown in this blog, but I do make commission on my code)

Skin Care Diaries: A Face Mask You Need

Skin Care Diaries: A Face Mask You Need

Since staying in more, my overall skin care has definitely improved. I haven’t felt the need to put on makeup everyday. My evenings are “in” rather than “out” which means I don’t *need* to wing my eyeliner. I have more time for my morning routine without a commute; I actually have time to wait for my moisturizer to sink in. Before, I would definitely be running out the door to get through the Starbucks line before class (a girl needs her americano, okay?).

With the slower pace, I’ve had more time to experiment with skin care too. Let’s be honest, it’s a pretty low-risk time for beauty. If a face mask makes your face a little red or impurities come to the surface, who’s going to see it? Just don’t try something new before your next Zoom call or Bumble digital date.

My latest trial was the Innisfree Volcanic Clay Mask. I have tried some of their products before and really liked them. I was excited when Her Campus sent me some more Innisfree product to test.

For some background on the brand, they have various k-beauty product lines. They focus on sustainability sourced and natural ingredients.

For some background on the product, it is stated to work with normal, combination, and oily skin types. My skin is on the sensitive side, and Innisfree products have been accommodating to that in the past.

When I opened the mask, I found the clay texture to be soft and creamy with some finely-ground bits. The little bits are walnut shell powder and volcanic clusters (hence the name). The clay mask had a fresh smell, but it was not overpowering. It went on very smoothly and felt light on my face.

As with many clay masks, it tightened a touch when it dried. When it was time to take it off, I just took a wash cloth and water. It didn’t take excessive rubbing to remove the mask.

After, my skin felt very smooth, and I didn’t have any redness to deal with. It really does cleanse and *gently* exfoliate. The mask can also help minimize the look of pores, even skin tone, and cleanse pollution particles. I was happy with my results after just one use, so I am excited to see what happens as I work it into my routine.

I tend to do a face mask once a week. Of course, it helps my skin, but also it feels good to schedule out some self-care. If you are looking for a product to treat yourself with, I definitely recommend Innisfree’s Volcanic Clay Mask.

You can check out the product here. If you try it out, let me know how you like it! I have found it pairs well with coffee and Cosmo, but feel free to enjoy it however you like.
