Exploring the Malibu of the Midwest: Sheboygan, WI

Exploring the Malibu of the Midwest: Sheboygan, WI

Just one hour away from my home in Green Bay is the city of Sheboygan. Yet before this October, I had never really been to the area before. Sure, I had driven through and seen the World’s Largest Symbol of Freedom from the road, but I hadn’t explored the other things that Sheboygan had to offer. I am happy I spent a weekend in the area to experience the city. Now, I have some new favorite restaurants and shops in the area, as well as a list of things I need to try when I visit again. Curious what you can do in the Malibu of the Midwest? Read on for my 2-day trip adventure!

On a Friday night, after work, I drove to Sheboygan. It was a quick and relaxing cruise! I arrived around 6:00 pm at The Watershed Hotel. I was very impressed with the overall aesthetic of the place. The lobby’s big fireplace gave all of the coziest vibes. My room was very modern and chic with a balcony overlooking the Sheboygan River. I got settled in quickly and ready for my dinner reservation.

I’m glad I went hungry to BoMallies because there were so many great dishes to taste. First up, I enjoyed some Beef Khalbi Smashed Dumplings. Then, I had some of the special of the night: Seafood Ravioli. I couldn’t resist the Mozzarella-Stuffed Meatballs (I’m a big fan of vodka sauce). And finally, I tried the Banh Mi Tacos. Everything I ate was absolutely incredible.

I highly recommend visiting this place with a friend or a group so you can sample around the different plates! I think the Smashed Dumplings may have been my favorite, but the Banh Mi Tacos were a very close second.

To drink, I had the Wisconsin Mule. It had cranberry vodka with honey, orange and rosemary syrup, fresh cranberries, and lime. Tasty and on the sweeter side! But, I suppose that wasn’t the only sweet thing I enjoyed… After a delicious meal, I had to try the Car Bomb Cake. Guinness chocolate cake, soaked with Baileys, Jameson cream cheese frosting… anyone else drooling?

Not only did BoMallies impress me with food, but also art! The walls were covered with unique pieces, and I even spotted one of my favorite artist’s works, Donald Topp. Yes, those are the ladies of the Mystery Machine all tatted up; I adore them.

Post-dinner, I wanted to check out 3 Sheeps Brewing. I always enjoy exploring breweries outside my area and adding new brews to my Untappd profile! At 3 Sheeps I enjoyed a Pumpkin Spice Beer (’tis the season). Typically, I don’t go for dark beers, but this one was nice and smooth. 3 Sheeps’ indoor space was roomy and definitely felt like the place to be on a Friday night.

The next day, I woke up to a gorgeous view from my hotel room and began getting ready for more exploring. My first stop was the Sheboygan Visitor Center. Here, you can get all of the information on local things to do, shop for souvenirs, and find unique pieces from local artists. They had a pull-tab art kit that I thought was awesome (here’s the artist’s site).

To fuel up, I visited Eb Flo Coffeehouse for a latte and avocado toast. The aesthetic was very relaxing, and I loved looking out on the water while sipping my coffee. This place made for a satisfying breakfast and a great start to the day.

I knew when I was planning to visit Sheboygan that I wanted to check out some local shops. First up, I visited the Hello Happiness Creativity Center. It’s a craft supply store that has new and second-hand items to get creative with. I enjoy bullet journaling and collaging, so I was excited to find bundles of different papers to work with. Whatever your craft of choice may be, I believe you’ll be able to find something that inspires you at Hello Happiness.

In Downtown Sheboygan, there were lots of shops to look around. Nikki’s Nex2New consignment shop was right up my alley. There, I found a cozy cardigan and a cute top to take home. Mainstream Boutique was fun to look around. They had lots of pretty pieces and perfect styles for the current fall and winter seasons. If you’re looking for a classic thrift shop, Revolution Resale is a great place to go.

One of my favorite shops was FreakToyz. They sell all sorts of unique toys, figurines, comics, and collectibles. I saw everything from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Doctor Who to Harley Quinn to… the list goes on! This place really had so many amazing things to look at. Here, I picked up a little Ash Pop Figurine to add to my haul.

In between shops, I discovered some murals downtown. The street art in Sheboygan is very lively and energetic. If you visit, don’t miss your chance to get abducted in the UFO mural!

I also explored the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC). It’s an art gallery that’s free to enter and look around! They also offer other programs and activities to engage with the arts. I was happy my visit landed at the same time that Patricia Piccinini’s exhibit, Encounters of Another Plot, was on. It was incredible to see it in person. I also caught Bea Fremderman’s exhibit, Weeds Compared to Flowers, which was very interesting (you can catch it until February 18, 2024). Also, did I mention that the JMKAC washrooms are works of art too?!

Walking around shops and art helped me work up an appetite for lunch. Pizza sounded good, so I ended up at Il Ritrovo. Little did I know that this pizza would definitely ruin some other pizzas for me. Il Ritrovo was the 5th Certified Vera Pizza Napoletana member in the United States. So what does that mean? Their wood-fired, Neapolitan pizza is authentic. Special training and strict requirements are needed to be a certified established. In short, this place is the real deal. It may go without saying, but the pizza was delicious!

Before hitting the road home, I had to take a moment to look out at the water and see if I could catch any surfers riding the waves. In case you didn’t already know, Sheboygan is nicknamed the Malibu of the Midwest because of its surf community! Yes, people surf on the Great Lakes (even in the winter).

I had the best time exploring Sheboygan for a couple of days and getting to know the area. Huge thanks to Visit Sheboygan for hosting me and guiding me on the adventure.

Have you been to Sheboygan? What local spots do you love? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments or on Instagram. Let’s chat!

Day Trip in the Fox Valley

Day Trip in the Fox Valley

My SO and I hit the road to the Fox Valley last Saturday. Appleton and Oshkosh aren’t too far away from our home in Green Bay, so they make perfect day trip destinations. It’s amazing how many places there are close to home that you may have never known about. I love checking out all of the hidden (and not-so-hidden) gems in Northeast Wisconsin – they make for great mini-adventures!

Here’s how we spent our day in the Valley:

Fueling Up at All Tied Up

On the way to Oshkosh, we stopped by All Tied Up in Appleton to grab brunch. It’s a flower shop and cafe, so they have pretty plants in their space, along with delicious food and drink. I ordered a Pumpkin Spice Latte and Tomato & Basil Avocado Toast – both hit the spot!

Exploring at EAA

Admittedly, I didn’t know a whole lot about planes going in, but the EAA Museum was very fun to explore. There were tons of interactive elements throughout the museum and massive displays to look at. If you’re an aviation or history buff, this place needs to be on your list! As a novice, I enjoyed it too!

Grabbing Lunch at Gabe’s

After walking around the EAA Museum, we were hungry. So, I searched for something local nearby and stumbled upon Gabe’s. All I can say is YUM. We both had the Beer Can Chicken Wrap, and it was perfect. Just the treat we needed before our last stop of the day…

Golfing at Glow in the Park

Our final stop was Glow in the Park! It’s an indoor mini golf course that literally glows in the dark. On the walls, you’ll see energetic designs and a few references to Alice in Wonderland. The 18 holes were each unique and offered some playful competition.

A Day Trip to Door County

A Day Trip to Door County

Living in Northeast WI, it’s easy to wake up and plan a spontaneous day trip to Door County on a day off. That’s exactly what my SO and I did last week. The weather was beautiful so getting outside and exploring sounded appealing.

On the way, we stopped by Grandma Tommy’s. It’s a cute country store with lots of knick-knacks, Door County treats, and Wisconsin items to look at. I wanted to take home one of the WI-shaped chairs but resisted (for now).

Once we got to Egg Harbor, we discovered Hatch Distilling Co. I enjoyed the laid-back and relaxed environment as soon as we walked in. It was fun to try all of their different whiskey and bourbons. Doc Wahl whiskey was a favorite!

For lunch, we decided on Wild Tomato for some delicious wood-fired pizza. It’s a must-have if you’re in the area! We ordered the Sausage & Pesto pizza (the Veggie is also a great option). Post-meal, it felt good to get a little walk in at Peninsula State Park.

The park has beautiful views as well as a lighthouse to explore and a tower to walk up. There are also opportunities to camp or kayak at Peninsula State Park which I think could make for a fun overnight trip.

On the way back to Green Bay, we stopped by the Egg Harbor Fun Park to go-kart and play mini golf. On most day trips, I don’t think you can go wrong seeking out a mini golf course. It’s something that just about everyone can enjoy!

Until next time, Door County…

Coffee Shops You Need to Visit in De Pere, WI

Coffee Shops You Need to Visit in De Pere, WI

In my last blog post, I shared six coffee shops in Downtown Green Bay. Downtown De Pere also has some great local stops to get your caffeine fix. In this blog, I will cover a few of my favorites, but I know there’s still more of De Pere that I need to explore! If you have any favorite coffee shops in the area, leave me a comment at the end of this post.

Luna Cafe

This is one of my favorite spots to grab brunch. They feature different daily sandwiches and wraps, so there’s guaranteed to be something new to try. The De Pere location is nice and cozy. It’s a great spot for getting some stuff done on your laptop or meeting up with friends. My go-to order here switches between a lavender honey latte or an iced americano with a splash of milk.

The Exchange

The best way to describe this coffee shop is aesthetic. It’s very industrial, with lots of wood, black, metal, and gold furniture and decor. I always enjoy their honey lattes (with almond milk) and their avocado toast. Speaking of their avocado toast, it’s not what you would typically expect. The base that would usually be bread is swapped out with a bubble waffle. My first impression was a bit skeptical, but after tasting it, I was a fan.

One piece of advice if you visit this shop on the weekend: get there early! It can get pretty busy, and it can be difficult to find a table. But it’s worth it.

Tazza Italian Coffee Co.

With exposed brick and greenery, this coffee shop is also very cute. I love this cafe for their seasonal flights. They have latte flights, hot chocolate flights, and even lemonade flights. Their latest round of lemonade flights features lavender, strawberry rose, hibiscus, and honey jasmine flavors. It was delicious, so try it while you can!

Exploring Coffee Shops in Downtown Green Bay

Exploring Coffee Shops in Downtown Green Bay

This past weekend, I joined in on the Cafe Crawl all around Downtown Green Bay. The crawl featured six different local coffee and tea shops and lots of unique caffeinated treats to enjoy. Admittedly, I’ve been waiting for this event to return since the last Cafe Crawl I went to in 2018. Coffee and hanging out downtown are just a couple of my favorite things, so this event is the perfect blend!

If you’re looking for a new cafe to try, you can’t go wrong with any of the shops that were on the Cafe Crawl route:

Daily Buzz Espresso Bar

The crawl began at Daily Buzz Espresso Bar. This shop is a favorite of mine since I can always count on enjoying something from their seasonal drink menu. Not to mention, their food is great and their bakery case is always mouth-watering. The aesthetic of Daily Buzz is a bit industrial yet still cozy.

Glas Coffeehouse

As you may guess from the name, Glas Coffeehouse has Irish roots. This place is my go-to when I want a big cup of cold brew. If you don’t get a chance to visit this shop in person, you should check if you’re in the designated area for their bike delivery. Yep, you read that right. They deliver coffee and treats in a very eco-friendly way.

Grounded Cafe at ADRC

If you’re looking for a cup of coffee that can make a difference, check out Grounded Cafe. They provide a space for people of all abilities and all ages to thrive. You can check them out on the ‘gram for all of their daily special announcements.

The Attic Books and Coffee

Calling all book lovers! The coffee shop doubles as a book shop. So, while you sip, you can also shop a variety of pre-loved books. I always recommend The Attic to friends who are new to the area.

Cultivate Taste Tea Salon

Cultivate Taste is a tea shop that’s somewhat new to the area and very new to me. I’ve stopped by a couple of times during local events like the Cafe Crawl, but I’d love to visit for an official tea tasting.

Voyageurs Bakehouse

This place is really beautiful and bright. Their lattes are artfully done, and their bakery treats are so yummy. Voyageurs is the kind of place that I enjoy going to on a slow Saturday morning. If you’re looking for a solid breakfast and an Instagramable location, this is your place.

Which coffee shops will you try or have you tried? Any favorites? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments or on Instagram. Let’s chat!

All Aboard for the Festival of Trees

All Aboard for the Festival of Trees

Posted in partnership with Discover Green Bay

Trees, Train Cars, and Tradition

The Festival of Trees is an event that the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay hosts annually. In Mid-November and throughout December, the museum is decorated with dozens of unique trees. The trees are all sponsored by different businesses and organizations in our area. The trees tend to reflect the personalities of the establishments that they represent.

According to the museums’ numbers, the event attracts more than twenty-thousand visitors each holiday season! After visiting the event this year, I can see why it is so popular. The day after Christmas, my family and I headed to the National Railroad Museum to check out the event. As soon as we walked in, we got a taste of what was to come. The lobby featured several large and glittering trees. My favorite was a tree from the Green Bay Botanical Garden. It was covered in a gorgeous arrangement of flowers and pinecones.

Beginning Our Tour in Fuller Hall

After getting our museum tickets, we entered exhibit space A: Fuller Hall. The first thing that caught my eye in this space was the Brown County Dairy Promotions tree. It had a cow tree topper that was just too cute. I also enjoyed the extremely shiny tree from American Antiques & Jewelry: it had a fun retro vibe.

In addition to the beautiful decor, this space held tons of Blatz, Pabst, and Schlitz memorabilia that accompanied the history of the Milwaukee Beer Line. The Beer Line is what the Milwaukee Road train route became known as since it served Milwaukee’s largest breweries. I recommend checking out the exhibit for a nice and detailed history!

Checking Out The Bauer Drumhead Gallery

In the next exhibit space, we got to see lots of train drumheads from the early 1900s to the 1970s. In case you didn’t already know, drumheads are big illuminated signs that trains used for identification and to promote themselves on the rails. Pretty cool, right?

Of course, we got to see more trees in this space too! The Green Bay Press-Gazette tree really stole the show for me. It was covered in a ton of mini newspapers and topped off with a huge red bow.

Entering The Lenfestey Center & Touring the Rolling Stock

In the Lenfestey Center, we were greeted by lots of bright trees and some massive trains. Seriously, one of the locomotive’s nicknames was literally “Big Boy.” One of my favorite parts about this space was being able to actually board the trains and explore them. I loved looking out of the train windows and seeing the rows of glittering trees down below.

In between jumping on the Eisenhower, the Chicago & North Western Joseph Lister hospital car, and the Escanaba & Lake Superior Snow Plow, we toured the trees at ground level. My favorite tree in this space was definitely the Captain’s Walk Winery tree. It had a “blue Christmas” theme with wine bottles, wine glasses, and wine corks hanging all over it. Terror on the Fox had a very unique and spooky tree that was completed with a jack-o-lantern tree topper. My family loved the Frozen-themed tree; I think it was mostly because it featured a big and adorable Olaf. Berners Schober’s tree was also great. It featured mini home blueprints of a few homes in Green Bay along with other gold and paper ornaments. The tree felt very on-brand and was truly stunning.

Heading Out to the McCormick Pavilion

It was a chilly winter day when we went to the museum, but we braved the cold to see the trains in the pavilion. The pavilion featured four tracks with a few trains on each track. Some of the trains we were able to jump on board and others we viewed on the outside. Looking in on one of the passenger trains, we were able to see lots of festive decorations and even a mini tree. It was a fun hidden gem!

Off The Rails and Heading Out

Personally, I had not been to the railroad museum in years, and I am not sure if my family had ever been, but we all loved the experience. It was just plain cool. None of us knew much about the railroad going into the museum, but we left knowing some fun facts and having more of an appreciation for railroad history. We also got to enjoy lots of holiday decor before 2023 is here!

If you are looking for a fun way to extend your holiday season, check out the Festival of Trees with some family or friends.

A Night at the EPIC: Tyler Rich comes to Green Bay

A Night at the EPIC: Tyler Rich comes to Green Bay

Posted in partnership with Discover Green Bay

It’s Friday Night, Let’s Go Out

I can’t pass up a night with live music. When I saw that the EPIC was bringing another country tour to town last Friday night, I knew I wanted to go to the show. I was sold when I saw that the event was partnered with Happily Ever After, a local animal sanctuary. Each ticket purchased directly helps the cats and dogs that the nonprofit cares for.

While I haven’t personally adopted a pet (yet), I know a few people that have adopted from Happily Ever After. I admire the organization, what they stand for, and the work they do. A fun night out for a great cause? Sign me up!

Arriving at the EPIC Event Center

As soon as I walked into the EPIC, I saw the partnership with Happily Ever After in action. Very cute and adoptable pups greeted us fans. I had the chance to meet a sweet dog, Alfredo. I’m sure every fan that held him wanted to take him home.

Lots of other dogs were hanging out around the venue before the show got started. I was happy that I arrived when the doors opened so I got to experience this. I’ve been to quite a few concerts, but I had never been to a show like this.

Getting Ready for the Music

I opted for standing tickets so I could be close to the action. However, the balcony at the EPIC is a nice option if you would like to reserve a seat. With standing tickets, it’s especially nice to show up to the concert early so you can walk around and scope out your spot.

I like having the time to grab a drink before the show gets started too. I enjoyed the drink special of the night that was themed after Tyler Rich’s dog, Yukon. Cleverly, the drink was made with Yukon Jack whiskey.

Let’s Get It Started: Mandi Sagal Takes the Stage

The first opener was Mandi Sagal, a Nashville singer-songwriter who is originally from Green Bay (and a Bay Port High alumnus). She had a very personal connection to the show since she adopted a cat from Happily Ever After years back.

Mandi performed lots of original tunes and even a Shania Twain cover alongside her husband who played the guitar. I loved her song, “One Less Broken Heart,” which is set to release in January. She shared a raw and real story behind the new music: I always find it impactful to hear the meaning of songs from the songwriters themselves.

Up Next: Time To Rock with Robyn Ottolini

You may know her from her TikTok viral hit, “F-150.” Robyn came out to the stage with lots of energy and a powerful band behind her. She delivered a variety of genres in between original songs and covers like Elle King and Miranda Lambert’s “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home).” In the crowd, we got to hear her rap, get a bit rock-and-roll, and even perform Hannah Montana’s “Best of Both Worlds.” It was incredible to hear her play the piano and perform “Trust Issues.” I was also happy to hear a bit more Shania; Robyn played “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” with her own unique twist.

Hello, Headliner: It’s Time for Tyler Rich

Last but certainly not least, Tyler Rich and his band met the audience. He’s no stranger to Green Bay or performing in Green Bay. Like Mandi, Tyler also adopted a furry companion from Happily Ever After. Near the end of the show, we got to see his dog, Yukon, come out on stage. It was really cool to hear the story of Yukon’s adoption and Tyler Rich’s personal connection to the area. Not to mention, it was amazing to hear him perform so many of his original songs and even a “Billie Jean” cover.

Tyler really engaged with the crowd and even refereed a beer-chugging contest between two fans in the front row. Near the end of the show, Robyn joined him for a song. His grand finale was “Leave Her Wild” (one of my favorites).

What A Night

Friday night’s concert was an excellent blend of performances that left me excited for what may be next at the EPIC. I will definitely be keeping my eye on upcoming show announcements. I understand that not every concert can be accompanied by adorable pups, but let’s just say, I wouldn’t mind it.

Things To Do This Summer in Green Bay, WI

Things To Do This Summer in Green Bay, WI

Summer is not over yet! There is still lots to do before we wrap up July and August, especially in Green Bay.

In this post, I’ll share five things that I’ve been enjoying this summer. If you also live in Green Bay, we may have some favorite things to do in common. Yet, I hope that you can find something new to try in this post! If you are not from Green Bay, I believe this post offers some good recommendations for a visit.

Go To the Downtown Farmers’ Markets

When the weather starts warming up in Green Bay, I always look forward to farmers’ market season. On Wednesday nights, you can catch the Farmers’ Market on Broadway from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There are local produce vendors as well as a few food trucks and beer tents. Also, you’ll find a handful of vendors selling floral bouquets.

On Saturday morning, there’s a farmers’ market from 7:00 am to noon on South Washington Street in Downtown Green Bay. I love to catch the free yoga at 8:00 am. This market also has a lot of local vendors and food trucks. I always have to stop by Coffee Wizardz‘s nitro cold brew stand; their draft lattes are incredible.

Enjoy Live Music, Wine Slushies, and Sangria at Captain’s Walk Winery

Captain’s Walk Winery is currently hosting a Summer Concert Series on Thursday nights (you can check the dates here). They have wine slushies on the menu Thursday through Sunday throughout summer. Yes, these are absolutely delicious.

Before summer is over, I need to make it to one of their Sangria Saturdays. From 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays in the summer, you can get 1 liter of sangria and a basket of chips with homemade salsa for just $14!

Attend Titletown District Events

There’s always something going on in Titletown. Lately, they’ve been hosting a series of free concerts with some pretty big names. I’m looking forward to seeing 3OH!3 on August 13th! In the district, they also host workout classes, outdoor movies, and more! You can check out their full calendar of events here.

Go Out On Downtown Dinner Dates

A few of my favorite places to grab dinner in Downtown Green Bay include Copper State, Vintage Cantina, and Fox Harbor. I probably frequent Fox Harbor the most, but Vintage is a close second. You can depend on these three for a good meal and good drinks.

Enjoy Live Music and Brews at Badger State Brewing

Badger State Brewing has live music in their beer garden every Friday night (now through August)! It’s the perfect spot to kick back, relax, and have a good time. They have a huge beer selection, and they frequently feature new brews. Lately, I’ve really liked Tiki Tom Margs, Stateside Seltzer’s Hard Lemonade, and Badger State’s Cran-Delusion.

A Weekend in Madison

A Weekend in Madison

Last Saturday, I made a mini-trip to Madison to visit a friend. Per usual, it was a great time! I figured I’d recap it on the blog, so you have some recommendations in case you ever find yourself in Madison.

I got in town at around 6:00 pm. Right away, my friend and I hit the shops. Ragstock was our first stop; they always have the best vintage pieces and fun new items. We also checked out Singlestitch. They had a pretty cool TV set up in the corner of their store, and I loved their fitting rooms. If you’re a fan of vintage t-shirts and hats, you should definitely check Singlestitch out.

After resisting some impulse buys, we grabbed dinner at Canteen. I ordered the spicy shrimp tacos and a spicy marg. It was absolutely delicious. I’ve also had and enjoyed their portabella mushroom tacos; they are a great vegetarian option!

Later that night, we ended up hanging out at Sotto for a bit and then Red Rock. Sotto is the spot to go to if you want a neon sign photo opp (pictured below). If you want to challenge your friends to ride a mechanical bull, check out Red Rock.

The next day, we got up bright and early for a Basecamp workout. Shoutout to them for inviting us to a class! It was high energy, fast-paced, and fun. I typically do at-home workouts with Obé, but I wouldn’t mind mixing in some more in-person classes.

For brunch, we grabbed Colectivo. The honey lavender latte and veggie burrito I had hit the spot. This is a coffee shop that I always like to stop at when I can.

Around 3:00 pm, I hit the road back home. Since Madison is only a two-hour drive away, I’m sure I’ll be back soon.

Have you ever explored Madison, WI? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments or on Instagram. Let’s chat!
